RoHS and WEEE compliance |
In 2003, the European Commission issued two Directives directly applicable to electronic equipment and, by extension, to payment terminals:
Directive 2002/95/EC on the Restriction of Hazardous Substances in electrical and electronic equipment (RoHS) Directive 2002/96/EC on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) |
RoHS: where the environmentally-friendly process begins |
Under RoHS guidelines, the use of six harmful substances – lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chrome, Polybrominated Biphenyls (PBB) and Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDE) – has been banned from electronic equipment. This has a specific impact on Printed Circuit Boards, including the electronic boards inside payment terminals. The new generation of Banksys terminals, XENTA, XENTISSIMO, and XENTEO is fully compliant with the RoHS Directive. |
WEEE: where electronic waste ends |
Under the WEEE Directive, which has been in force since 13th August 2005, manufacturers and importers are required to provide systems for recovering (taking back) the electronic equipment they supply. The WEEE Directive has been fully implemented by Banksys since August 2005 and the national take-back obligation is being fulfilled. All newly produced terminals feature a label identifying Banksys as the manufacturer, together with the production date and the required symbol. |
