Secure POS terminals

Security is one of the areas for which Atos Worldline has earned its reputation of excellence. Terminals protect the cardholder’s privacy, the payment data and the data transfer through state-of-the-art technology and sturdy, tamper-proof design.

Tamper-proof design

Our terminals are designed to be easy to use, and to protect the customer's privacy with integrated PIN shields. When it comes to anti-tampering, Atos Worldline terminals stand out at various levels:

  • Tamper evident: the way and the order in which the various parts of the terminal are assembled make it very hard to open the terminal without visibly damaging it; the tamper-evident housing includes the display, the keypad, the secure area and the card readers.
  • Tamper responsive: the secure area and the critical components it holds are protected by an extended set of tamper-responsive features, preventing access to sensitive data.
  • Tamper resistant: a whole set of features have been implemented as passive barriers, as defined in the ISO13491 specification.

Patented technology

The European Patent Office has granted official patents for technology developed by Atos Worldline for its terminals.

The patents range from hardware to software applications and are a recognition of the degree of innovation and uniqueness of these developments.

Secure data transmission

Transmission of transaction data takes place under the strictest security and encryption protocols. Read more about the SSL technology for transactions sent over the Internet.

Atos Worldline, member of SPVA

In May 2009, Atos Worldline joined the non-profit Secure POS Vendor Alliance (SPVA). The SPVA was created by Hypercom, Ingenico S.A. and VeriFone to foster widespread compliance of existing security standards to protect cardholder information and defend merchants and acquirers against security breaches.

SPVA members provide the key security elements among consumers, merchants and transaction acquirers and issuers. Members of the SPVA deliver a unique experience with security guidelines, ensure best practice implementation and continue to evolve security enhancements and interoperability required to reduce fraud and lower risk for all participants in card payment transactions. Membership is open to all vendors that develop secure POS payment systems or have products or solutions that interact with secure POS payment devices such as retailers, acquirers and banks.

The membership in the SPVA reinforces our commitment to advancing security within our industry, enables us to gain first-hand knowledge of current security threats and proactively shape future security guidelines.
